Minecraft Bedrock server hosting and Java crossplay

Chunkly runs Minecraft Bedrock in two ways. A dedicated Bedrock server is a world made for Bedrock players on Windows, Android, and iOS. Bedrock crossplay is a Paper or Purpur Java world that Bedrock players can join too. Both are on Village Budget at €0.85/GB and Kingdom Premium at €1.90/GB per month, hosted in Europe with monthly cancel. Campfire, the free tier, is Java only.

Java friends join name.play.chunkly.net on port 25565. Bedrock friends use the same hostname plus the UDP port shown on the world page. Prices match plans.

Dedicated Bedrock or crossplay

Both options give Bedrock players a server to join. The difference is who else is in the group.

Dedicated Bedrock server

  • Everyone plays Bedrock: Windows, Android, and iOS.
  • You pick Bedrock when you create the world. An existing world stays Java or Bedrock.
  • Runs the current Bedrock version. Java plugins and mods do not apply.

Java world with Bedrock crossplay

  • Paper or Purpur on Minecraft 1.20.5 or newer.
  • Java players join on port 25565, Bedrock players on the UDP port from the world page.
  • Turn it on or off in the world's Settings tab. The world restarts when you switch.
  • Java plugins keep working, and Bedrock players join with their own Bedrock account.

Pick dedicated Bedrock when nobody in the group plays Java. Pick crossplay when the group is mixed, or when you want Paper plugins.

Set it up

The whole setup happens in the panel. No files to edit.

  1. Pick Village or Kingdom on plans. Campfire cannot run Bedrock.
  2. For a Bedrock-only group, choose Bedrock when you create the world. For a mixed group, choose Paper or Purpur on 1.20.5 or newer.
  3. On a Paper or Purpur world, open the Settings tab and turn on Bedrock crossplay. The world restarts.
  4. Copy the Bedrock address from the world page: the hostname and the UDP port.
  5. In Minecraft Bedrock, open Play, then the Servers tab, then Add Server, and enter the hostname and that port.
  6. Java friends keep using name.play.chunkly.net in Multiplayer, as in how friends join.

RAM and price

Buy for the number of people online at once. These are starting points from the plan cards, not a benchmark.

GroupStarting pointPrice
Up to about 6 friends, light playVillage 2 GB€1.70/mo
Typical mixed SMP with crossplayVillage 4 GB€3.40/mo
Bigger group or many pluginsVillage 6 GB€5.10/mo
More headroom on PremiumKingdom 4 GB€7.60/mo

Crossplay adds a translation layer to a Java world, so give a crossplay world a little more room than the same world on Java only. You can change size later in the Stripe portal, and the world stays.

A Paper crossplay world sleeps after about 12 minutes empty. Bedrock players join while the world is online; if it is asleep, a Java friend joining or the Start button wakes it. See sleep and wake.
