Why Your Server Sleeps & How Wake-on-Join Works

The technology behind our €0.85/GB pricing that keeps dedicated NVMe storage ready 24/7.

The Problem with Traditional Hosting

Traditional Minecraft hosts charge you €3 to €5 per GB because their business model forces servers to consume expensive memory around the clock—even at 4:00 AM on a Tuesday when everyone is asleep. You end up paying for thousands of idle CPU cycles.

How Chunkly Sleep-When-Empty Works

  1. Active Gaming: While players are online, your server runs with full dedicated CPU priority and RAM allocation on enterprise AMD EPYC / Ryzen hardware.
  2. Player Inactivity: When the last player disconnects, an idle timer starts (~6 minutes on Campfire, ~12 minutes on Village).
  3. Graceful Sleep: If no players rejoin, the world state is flushed cleanly to NVMe SSD storage, and the heavy Java process releases active memory into a proxy listening standby mode.
  4. Wake-on-Join: When any player connects to your address (e.g. myserver.play.chunkly.net), our edge proxy immediately detects the Minecraft handshake packet and boots the container in 15 to 30 seconds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does sleep mode delete or reset my world?

Never. Sleep mode performs a clean /save-all before pausing. All builds, player positions, inventories, villager trades, and redstone contraptions remain 100% intact on persistent NVMe storage.

Do modpacks sleep?

Heavy modpacks (Forge/NeoForge with 200+ mods) can take 2–3 minutes to boot Java bytecode, so by default, modded worlds stay always-on unless manually stopped in the panel.

Can I disable sleep mode?

Yes. Kingdom Premium tier servers have an option under SettingsIdle Policy to keep the server running 24/7 continuously.
